editors bit This issue sees the second and last part of our Trumpet Tales featuring two massively influential trumpeters working at opposite ends of the contemporary music spectrum, the incredible Jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and Markus Stockhausen (the prolific German son of Karlheinz) ,who has carved a reputation for his ability to improvise, compose and cross all musical barriers with ease. Our last series of Electro -Acoustic features seem to have gone done well, so these will now become permanent additions to the magazine, with this issue featuring amongst others the amazing Large Hot Pipe Organ of Bastian Maris, Music for Wires from Alan Lamb and Paul Panyussen, and some wonderful electro acoustic music for cello , harp, computer and electronics by Cellosphere, Cellorythmics and the virtuoso Argentinian harpist Sofia Asuncion Caro. |
| Last
issue we started to look at British organisations involved with promoting
contemporary music, and some recent ground breaking work by the SPNM (Society for the
Promotion of Music)in particular, this issue we look at the BMIC (British Music
Information Centre), and next issue will spotlight the Sonic Arts Network. We promised in an earlier issue to bring you the article on the extraordinary British percussionist now living in Europe, Steve Hubback, so here It finally is, complete with another percussion article this time on the American percussionist Alex Cline written by Michael Bettine. On the contemporary classical front we have interviews with British composers Steve Montague and Keith Beal, while theres plenty also for jazz lovers ,with a look at the prolific bass player Charlie Haden and the beginning of a new series on Saxophonists. In this area we have a fascinating article on the rarely discussed and underrated John Tchicai, plus the Norwegian phenomenon Frode Gjerstad. Next issue features the incredible Dying like a dog Peter Brötzmann, the young British jazzer Jamie Anderson, Julian Arguelles and the veteran British virtuoso Alan Skidmore. We also finish our series on
Italian festivals with a great roundup of Ruvo, Umbria and Molfetta by Duncan Heining and
our intrepid Italian correspondent Francesco Martinelli, and just about found room to
increase (by demand )our CD reviews from 8 to 10 pages!! Hope you like it!! |
