editors bit A very warm welcome to the first Avant in a new millennium, one that I hope will be packed with exciting music and art, reflecting a fairer and more logical balance between the coziness of the art of the past and the excitement and risk of the now. We continue in this issue with our major overhaul of the saxophone in contemporary music, especially as the prime exponent in the world of Jazz, and we feature a striking contrast between the young British virtuoso Julian Arguelles and the brilliant British veteran Alan Skidmore, alongside the powerful sound of German Peter Brötzmann, saxophonists representing the entire contemporary Jazz spectrum. On the more experimental front Roger Sutherland presents a fascinating explanation of the death of the Scratch Orchestra, while Derek Shiel prepares for a major exhibition of metallic sound object sculpture at the Estorick Gallery we also have wonderful interviews with Pauline Oliveros and Mike Cooper plus a review of the recent and excellent Controindicazioni13 festival of improvised music in Rome. |
| We also continue our
regular features on percussion, with a brilliant exposé of drummer Louis Moholo (recently
on a major tour with his Free Spirits) by Steve Day, while American Michael
Bettine continues his series, this time on the dynamic American drummer/percussionist
Gerry Hemingway. On the electro-acoustic front we have a preview of the brilliant American composer/artist Annie Gosfields recent recording project in the EWA7 factory in Germany, (utilising all the sounds of the factory), while our recent harp series continues with Helene Breschand, the French harpist working in an improvisatory field, interviewed by our own expert harpist Rhodri Davies who is featured himself next month. We must also apologise for the delay in getting you the articles on Joelle Leandre and Francine Luce, nothing sexist!, they will definitely be in the next issue. We also continue our series about organisations promoting contemporary music in the UK, and continue with the excellent Sonic Arts Network, (the SPNM and BMI were featured in our previous two issues) We have also had to increase performance space this issue due to some excellent response and our cover CD is from the excellent British company Shaping the invisible. Just time also to remind you of our new websites all currently up and running, AVANT is on www.avantmag.com while our sister company FMR records is on www.fmr-records.com those enterprising Baschet brothers also have a new site if you are interested in sound sculpture at www.baschet.net |
