editors bit We seem to have come full circle with this issue, a Percussion Special (as indeed only our second issue was way back in 1996!). In this issue we have interviews and its a pleasure not only because this family of instruments has come so far, but because in this issue we have interviews and articles on two of the worlds leading and most dynamic female percussionists in Evelyn Glennie and Robin Schulkowsky (with Marilyn Mazur to come next issue). A truly international roundup of artists of outstanding contribution to contemporary music from Danmark the USA as well as the UK. This special International collection is completed by many other excellent percussionists such as the Swiss wizards Fritz Hauser, and Fredy Studer and our own percussionist extraordinaire Paul Burwell, plus a report on the action packed World Festival of the Drum held at the Expo 2000 in Hannover recently. Fans of the saxophone also have a treat this issue with the continuation of our Saxophone Secrets series featuring a diverse collection of players such as Evan Parker, Charles Lloyd, Peter Brotzman, the enigmatic Albert Ayler and our own young lion Paul Dunmall! |
| We are
also pleased to present the second (and concluding part) of Howard Mandells fascinating
'Future Jazz' and we continue our Piano Poles series with a look at ex pat British
keyboardist and composer Roger Dean (now living down under), and Japanese pianist Yakoto
Fujii, plus our usual roundup of concert and Contemporary Music Festivals around the
World. For this issue Duncan Heining reports from Peruggia in Italy, Francesco Martinellii
from Istanbul and (yours truly) from Rome and we welcome a new writer in Darrell J.
Rostron reporting on the intriguing Frank Zappa Zappening 2000 at Peroria , Illinois
during August, with finally a report on perussionist Mark Lockets recent exibition and
concerts at the Ikon in Birmingham. Add to all this extra articles on Annie Whitehead and Annette Peacock, our 'Gallery' and 'Scene' pages , book and CD reviews and not one but three free FMR cds! and I think we can fiarly say this action packed 78 page colour issue is better value than ever!! |
