editors bit Welcome to a new year, and hopefully one full of exciting and challenging new music! This issue we finish our major series on percussion with wonderful interviews and articles on some of the most creative players on the pianet. It;s particularly international too, featuring Marilyn Mazur from Denmark, Gino Robair from the USA, Gunter Muller from Switzerland, Dirk Wachtelaer from Belgium, plus Paul Barwell and Frank Perry from the UK! We are also very pleased to finally present an interview with the phenomenally talented (and very exclusive) virtuoso French bass player Joelle Leandre. The interview is part of a fascinating new book by Brian Marley on Improvisation (Tickling Music) and we will do a full review of that in next issue also. It's a pleasure to bring you on of John Wickes excellent articles, this time on legendary composer/conductor Gunther Schuller, who just turned 70 and visited the UK recently to conduct a concert of his own music at the Barbican. |

may we can't seem to escape saxophonists! And although they have had more than their fair
share in these pages we keep getting some excellent articles come in, and often about
great saxophonist's who rarely get any press! So its wonderful to present this issue: John
Butcher, Stefano Maltese and the little known Dutch phenomenon Ad Peijnenburg. Mark Greenaway has gone to town too! Not only a brilliant and quite controversial article/interview with Marshall Allen, but a Sun Ra book review and full page of Sun Ra CD Reviews!
