AVANT  ISSUE 19  SUMMER  2001

editors bit

This issue sees two major new series by Roger Sutherland. 'The Aesthetics of Cataclysm' - 'an exploration of chaos in music' (at 10 pages, the longest article we have ever run), and the main theme of this issue, 'Sound Sculpture and invented instruments'. To make this irresistible issue complete, we have included a free CD of the same name to provide and overview of the artform, and have also included various new articles and notes on developments by major players such as The American Festival of Microtonal Ensemble, Hugh Davies, The Baschet Brothers, Chas Smith, Alan Lamb, and Terje Isungset', who as well being a brilliant percussionist is also responsible for the incredible ice sound sculptures! (See article next issue).

The Spirit of Harry Partch was back at he Barbican on London recently, when Johnny Reinhard and the American Festival of Microtonal Music Ensemble paid us their first visit. Roger Merrick from the British Harry Partch Society caught up with them.

Many of our usual series' are also featured, including an excellent ' Saxophone Secrets' this issue, with the contrast of Ornette's recent trip to Belfast and the Barbican(reviewed by Steve Day0, who also looks at the highly underrated Simon Picard. While one of our many Italian friends Vittorio Lo Conte gets a rare interview with saxophonist and vibraphonist Gunter Hampel.

Our front cover is adorned this issue by Thomas Widermark, a name who may not mean much in the UK (Yet!), but in his highly illuminating article Michael Tucker (author of Jan Garbarek' Deep Song') gives us a fascinating insight into this highly talented young Norwegian composer and keyboardist.

In our 'Percussion profiles' series we have a brand new and as usual excellent look at American drummer/percussionist Paul Motian by our Intrepid American correspondent Michael Bettine, while John Wickes concludes his two part article on Gunther Schuller.

Again on the subject of Sound Sculpture and invented instruments, Malcolm Ball reviews a truly intriguing new book by Albert Glinski on Leo Theremin, 'Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage'.

Last, but no least, our website (and that of FMR-Records.com) has finally been updated (not before time we hear  you sigh!) and some of the previous problems re-ordering have been resolved.
