editors bit Welcome to our late summer Avant, of which I am pleased to include our special piano edition 'Piano Poles' which includes not only up to date information on the recent activities of diverse pianists such as Cecil Taylor, Mike Westbrook, Leon Michener and John Wolf Brennan, but two heart rending reviews of the lives of Jerry Underwood and Peter Jacobsen by John Wickes. On a personal note, Peter was a very close friend of mine for over thirty years, an enormous talent and a wonderful person and both of them will be missed terribly. Summer means it is festival time and we include two excellent reviews, as always of an international nature, this time by Francesco Martinelli (Istanbul), and Mike Tucker (Bergen). Of a more alarming nature, we include the on going legal confrontation between flautist James Newton and The Beastie Boys, a very sad state of affairs if ever there was one and a serious worry to all creative musicians and groups. |
| We include two excellant label profiles, one on the new ECM 'rarum series' imprint and the other on the recently 'ECM-adopted' label Rune Grammofon by Michael Tucker and John Cratchley respectively. We also have more reports from the world of Sound Sculpture and Invented Instruments with the wonderful Hugh Davies and Ferdinand Forsch and articles on the return of Lol Coxhill with Scotland's Burt/MacDonald Quartet, saxophonist Rob HGall's new group and more from the World fusion scene with new group Dha and Badal Roy with Geoff Warren, not to mention all the latest CD and Book reviews. Enjoy! | |
